Catacomb Kom Elshaoqafa

In 1900, a donkey’s unexpected disappearance led to the discovery of these catacombs, which are now recognized as the largest known Roman burial site in Egypt and one of the final significant constructions linked to ancient Egyptian religion. Showcasing the unique blend of Pharaonic and Greek architectural styles that Alexandria is famous for, the builders employed a Graeco-Roman design. The catacombs feature three levels of tombs and chambers carved into the bedrock, reaching a depth of 35 meters.
