This area was once part of the ancient city of Thebes and served as the final resting place for nearly all the pharaohs from the 18th to the 20th dynasties, spanning the years 1539 to 1075 BCE, including notable rulers like Thutmose I and Ramses X. Nestled in the hills behind Dayr al-Baḥrī, the 62 tombs discovered here showcase a rich diversity in both their architectural designs and decorative styles. In 1979, UNESCO recognized the valley as part of the World Heritage site of ancient Thebes, which also encompasses Luxor, the Valley of the Queens, and Karnak.
