About Fujairah
Fujairah is the only emirate situated entirely on the eastern coast of the UAE, along the Gulf of Oman. The coastline of Fujairah stretches for approximately 70km, from the southern city of Fujairah to the northern town of Dibba. The total area of the emirate is 1,450 sq. km.
Population-wise, Fujairah had an estimated population of 256,256 as of 2019.
In terms of location, Fujairah shares borders with the emirates of Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah to the west, and with the emirate of Sharjah to the south. It also has an international border with the Sultanate of Oman to the north.
The economy of Fujairah relies on fishing and agriculture, with its land being irrigated by rainwater from the Hajjar mountains. Its strategic position grants it the UAE’s only access to the Indian Ocean, and it operates a versatile port that serves as a gateway to major shipping routes. The emirate is also home to the world’s largest livestock shipping companies. Other local industries include mining and stone crushing, which have thrived due to the construction boom in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The Fujairah Free Zone, located around the port, encourages foreign investment in banking and trade. In 2014, the emirate’s GDP reached AED14,093 million. Additionally, Fujairah launched the ‘Fujairah Plan 2040’ in 2015, which involves the development of the port, expansion of the airport, and other infrastructure improvements.
Fujairah is known for its stunning natural landscapes, including rugged mountains, valleys, waterfalls, oases, and beautiful sandy beaches. It also boasts various hot, cold, and mineral springs.
Fujairah’s climate is more moderate due to its easterly location, making it a popular destination for weekend visitors seeking to escape the heat. The relaxed and peaceful atmosphere of Fujairah attracts many tourists, with major attractions including Wadi Al Wurayah waterfalls, Ain Al Madhab Gardens, Al Bidya Mosque, and the Heritage Village.
Fujairah’s modern history dates back to 1808 when Sheikh Mohammed bin Mattar built his castle and the old city. The current Ruler of Fujairah is H. H. Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi.
